I found Amicia to be a whiny character and not very likeable and while she is portrayed as being smart, she makes a lot of unwise decisions. The ending is strange and truly makes no sense, but you cannot expound on that without giving spoilers. The major antagonist are supposed to be evil and stronger than the king but are easily defeated and not even intentionally. The leading characters talk about many things that the listener is not privy to know just how they happened. A lot of things seem to happen off the page. The beginning moves along nicely but soon the story begins to drag. It is book one, so it does introduce the listener to the world. This retelling adds some other elements to the story that do not get explained very well in this book. The main characters play their parts, but everyone is one dimensional and I felt it hard to get lost in their story.

It is an interesting twist on the Beauty and the Beast story.
